Revealing atomic-scale vacancy-solute interaction in nickel

چکیده

Imaging individual vacancies in solids and revealing their interactions with solute atoms remains one of the frontiers microscopy microanalysis. Here we study a creep-deformed binary Ni-2 at.% Ta alloy. Atom probe tomography reveals random distribution Ta. Field ion microscopy, contrast interpretation supported by density-functional theory time-of-flight mass spectrometry, evidences positive correlation tantalum vacancies. Our results support solute-vacancy binding, which explains improvement creep resistance Ta-containing Ni-based superalloys helps guide future material design strategies.

Solute–vacancy binding in aluminum

Previous efforts to understand solute–vacancy binding in aluminum alloys have been hampered by a scarcity of reliable, quantitative experimental measurements. Here, we report a large database of solute–vacancy binding energies determined from first-principles density functional calculations. The calculated binding energies agree well with accurate measurements where available, and provide an ac...

Nanometer-scale solute clustering in aluminum!/nickel!/ytterbium metallic glasses

The transformation sequence of melt-spun Al!/5.2at.% Ni!/6.8at.% Yb is characterized by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and atom-probe field-ion microscopy. An isochronal DSC thermogram detects three major exothermic transformation steps, with onset temperatures of 180, 292, and 327 8C, respectively. Atom-probe analyses reveal the evolution of compositional inhomogen...

Vacancy Mobility in Nickel Aluminide versus Composition

The fractional concentration of Ni-vacancies in NiAl at high temperature has been determined for compositions between 50 and 53 at.% Ni from measurements using perturbed angular correlation of gamma rays (PAC). The vacancies were detected by quadrupole interactions induced at nearby In/Cd impurity probes present on the Al sublattice in high dilution. One set of measurements was made at high tem...

Atomic Scale Verification of Oxide-Ion Vacancy Distribution near a Single Grain Boundary in YSZ

This study presents atomic scale characterization of grain boundary defect structure in a functional oxide with implications for a wide range of electrochemical and electronic behavior. Indeed, grain boundary engineering can alter transport and kinetic properties by several orders of magnitude. Here we report experimental observation and determination of oxide-ion vacancy concentration near the...

The vacancy - edge dislocation interaction in fcc metals: a comparison between atomic simulations and elasticity theory

The interaction between vacancies and edge dislocations in face centered cubic metals (Al, Au, Cu, Ni) is studied at different length scales. Using empirical potentials and static relaxation, atomic simulations give us a precise description of this interaction, mostly in the case when the separation distance between both defects is small. At larger distances, elasticity theory can be used to pr...
